Bungie's Troubled Action Game Project Marathon Is Gaining Momentum
The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Bungie's much-anticipated game, has resurfaced with the news of a exclusive testing phase scheduled to begin in October.
A Rocky Development Journey
First announced during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Marathon has experienced a bumpy development cycle. In October 2024, Bungie announced it was aiming to start Alpha tests sometime in 2025. A period of silence followed, until the project was showcased again in spring with a Sept. 23 launch date. However, after some playtests led to mixed reactions, the studio announced in June that it was postponing the game's launch.
Steering Clear of Controversy
Despite Marathon has already seen its fair share of issues, Bungie appears determined to make certain Marathon doesn't suffer the same outcome as other games. Now, it appears the game's development is finally getting back on track, as they just revealed that it has conducted multiple private tests to gather feedback on Marathon" since June of this year. The developer is expanding access, allowing more players to catch a glimpse of the game via an upcoming "closed technical test."
Exclusive Testing Information
Considering it's a closed testing phase, it's understandably limited access than, for example, an open beta. To gain access in the technical test — which takes place between October 22nd to October 28th — players must satisfy the listed requirements:
- Apply via their platform
- Reside in supported regions
- Own a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X or S, or Windows PC (minimum PC specs include an compatible CPU, supported graphics card, and sufficient memory)
- Participate in their community platform
- Complete confidentiality agreement via the online community
Application Process
Applications are open now, and to be considered for the technical test, players must submit their application by Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. PDT. Players on Windows PC can also register via the digital platform starting on October 13th, with Steam applications due by Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. PDT. The developer will contact players who qualify and inform them of the following procedures.
"This is an important checkpoint for us as we evaluate enhancements since the game's Alpha, including three maps, several character options, prox chat, adjusted gameplay rhythm, individual matchmaking, enhanced narrative elements, and more," Bungie said. "However, the current version is a work in progress and will only include a portion of what's planned for Marathon's full release, focused on the initial gameplay moments."
Further Details
Additional details about the private trial and the game itself can be located on Marathon's help page. But for individuals who aren't selected for the trial (or don't have time), there's positive developments: Bungie says a public update on the state of the game is the next thing on the schedule once the trial concludes.
"We'll be sharing a public update on Marathon's development in the coming months after the private testing phase!" The studio announced.
